802.11 Geolocation

These last years, the 802.11 standard for wireless networks has established itself as one of the leading Internet access provider technology. Nowadays, many companies, universities and individual persons are already equipped. As the first methods of radio-navigation, the Wi-Fi signal intensity analysis of the wireless cards and of the access points allows to compute the real position of an equipment.

According to its solid background in wireless network domain, the "Networking & Protocols" research team has decided to provide a 802.11 geolocation system to "Osiris" network, which is the wireless network of the Louis Pasteur University. There are several motivations behind this deployment:

  • The validation of the positioning system.
  • The study of the individual mobility.
  • The measurements of routing metrics for wireless meshed networks.

Deployment

The project weFiND is a set of geolocation tools, which allow to:

  • Scan the wireless environment.
  • Test several positioning algorithms.
  • Visualize your own position.
  • Manage a centralized geolocation server.

<videoflash>XGJqcLXnTAA</videoflash> Experimentations inside the LSIIT building have been made to estimate the accuracy of the geolocation methods. The opposite video illustrates the move of 4 laptops equipped with a wireless card. The accuracy measured is less than 10 meters.

As part of an real experimentation at a large scale, a cartography of the whole access points of the Strasbourg campus has been carried out. Therefore, each wireless network user can estimate is own current position.

A Java applet is available for the users present on the campus. A showcase offline version allows to simulate the 802.11 geolocation usage outside the campus. Wefind applet.jpg

Community

In order to give a social dimension and to create a community to the weFiND project, a geolocation exchanger plug-in has been created for the instant messaging client SIP-Communicator. The coordinates are exchanged between all the contacts of the same account with the Jabber protocol.
